Brasil Ride 10 years: Avancini wins cross country but Ferreira and Becking increase the gap

Brazilian cyclist was the fastest of the stage in which the duos can ride separately. However, a tough race for Manuel Fumic had Tiago Ferreira and Hans Becking increasing the gap ahead of their main opponents by more than eight minutes.

The anticipated cross country stage, the one before the last in Brasil Ride 2019, had its first start at 10 am on Friday (25). Contested on an 8-km circuit in Arraial d'Ajuda, it is an opportunity for the mountain biking enthusiasts to follow the best riders in the world completing four laps to define the winners of the day. In the men’s elite, Henrique Avancini (Cannondale Factory Racing XC) was the fastest, finishing in 1h24min08. Completing the podium, Sebastin Fini (CST Sannd American Eagle MTB Racing Team) and Hans Becking (DMT Racing Team) completed 1h24min37 and 1h25min28 respectively.

With the results of the averages of each duo, Tiago Ferreira and Hans Becking increased their lead, averaging 1h26min07, resulting second place by teams, and now they have an advantage of 8min04 ahead of the German-Brazilian duo. The winners of the stage in the team standings were Sebastian Fini and German Julian Schelb at 1:25:17. Henrique Avancini and German Manuel Fumic finished the day in 1h26min24, fourth in teams.

"I honestly left aside the dispute for the GC. I rushed through the stage. During the race I did not even think about setting a consistent pace, because I never won the cross country (the Porto Seguro version) and I really wanted to win, because of the surreal affection and support I receive from the people here. I wanted to win this stage for them. A matter of honor, to compete at home in front of my people. We came to the overall lead at one point, and we have attacked Tiago and Hans daily, and this time was no different. I wanted to ride fast, to cross the finish line first. I made a point of it and was committed to it," said Avancini.

Second and third places in the cross country, Sebastian Fini and Hans Becking evaluated the stage. "I did everything I could and finished second. Avancini was very strong on the last lap, although I was fine too. Happy for another cross country podium and the duo's win on the stage, as Julian was also very fast," said Fini. "Today was a good day, but the beginning was hard. I couldn't do a recognition of the route, and couldn't quite remember what the layout was like. We are motivated, Tiago did a great job and now we can not lose more than eight minutes. They will put pressure on us, as it should, and we will defend ourselves," said Hans.

In addition to revealing the planning of the day, the Portuguese Tiago Ferreira also told how the race developed on Friday. “It was a good stage for us. Not only did we not waste time, we gained a few seconds. Hans and I agreed that he would seek to win or be on the podium, and I would keep up a steady pace, without falling in order not to harm the team. Our strategy worked well, mainly because Fumic had a crash and thus lost the front group. Besides working well as a duo, we had Henrique and Manuel’s bad luck on our favor," commented Tiago Ferreira.

Ferreira also predicts a last stage that will not be easy. "The seventh stage will be dangerous, because surely the opposing duo will race like we did in 2018, attacking from start to finish. The difference is that the gap was two minutes then, and now it is over eight minutes. It will be less than 50 km, and we do not want the win of the stage, but the overall. We will enjoy the day, have no problems with our bicycles, have no falls and try to finish the 10th edition with the yellow jersey", finished Tiago.

Women’s elite with title underway - In the women's dispute, Viviane Favery and Tania Clair Piclker (Cannondale Brasil Racing / Soul Cycles) already have one hand on the Brasil Ride "cup" in their category. Vivi, as she is known, was the highlight of the race among women and finished first at 1:26:23, completing three laps. The top 3 also had Danilas Ferreira (Tropix Brasil) and Letícia Cândido (Corinthians Audax), with the times of 1h27min58 and 1h28min59, respectively. Vivi and Leticia are now 24 minutes ahead of Sense Factory Racing's Jaqueline Mourão and Danilas, runners-up in the GC, and owners of the American Women jersey.

Seventh stage - The decisive stage is 46 km long. The first 9 km flow on dirt roads. From km 9 to 13 lots of single tracks and few sections for overtaking. From km 13 to 19 a flatter and wider stretch. At kilometer 19, another single track in the Pau Brasil National Park. Many trees and stumps to overcome, demanding technical handling. The athletes have to be cautious with the sharp turns. From km 19 onwards, roads and trails. A short stage, with the intention is to finish in a lighter way, since the second to the fifth step have been long distances. At the same time, the Brasil Ride will have the Discovery Marathon with a course of 72 kilometers.
