Mucugê, Bahia, Brasil - The bad luck streak of Austrians Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner persisted in the sixth stage of Brazil Ride, between Rio de Contas and Mucugê, in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia. After three flats in the fifth stage of the competition, on Friday (23rd) the day was even worse. The duo that was leading the main MTB ultramarathon in the Americas is now out of the competition. Better luck to Dutchman Hans Becking and Czeck Jiri Novak, winners of the stage. Now they have a 39min08 gap ahead of Hugo Prado Neto and Lukas Kaufmann. The decision for the title will be held this Saturday (24th), starting at 9 a.m. (12 p.m. GMT) in Mucugê, with a 72.1-kilometer course.
After securing the 2014 title in the last stage, Becking and Novakonce again took the lead at the end of the competition. "It was a very hard race to me. In the first climb the Austrians were very fast, but we stayed in the group. After two flats, we managed to escape. Its crazy because Hans and I went without mistakes, we had perfect tempo. We made no mistakes, we had a perfect tempo, and that is very important in this race", said Jiri Novak.
The Austrian duo was among the first riders until the end of the first climb of the route, leavingRio de Contas. However, in the end of the following section, the downhill, they hadthe first mechanical problem, a flat tire in Hermans bike. Then at km 60of a 143-km stage, it was the turnof one of Daniels tires being damaged, only fixed at the Shimano NeutralSupport. Ten kilometers to the finish line, an accident between the two teammates put an end to the Austrians dream.
"It was the worst day in the bike in my life. I think physically we were the strongest team. We came to Brazil in such a good shape, but flat tires and crashes took us out of the competition. Daniel touched my wheel I think at 50 Km/h and he had a horrible crash. I have to forget this day. So much bad luck. I cant believe it", lamented Herman.
The runners-up of the stage were Hallyson Ferreira and Rafael "Catalan" Mesquita. The third place of the podium was defined in two sprints to the finish line. In the average timing, Steffen Thum and Remi Laffont secured the third place just three seconds apart from Henrique Avancini and Wolfgang Olsen. Runners-up in the Open category GC, Hugo Prado Neto and Lukas Kaufmann finished in 14ª place.
Fourth overall, Steffen Thum and Remi Laffont could not hide their joy with the second podium in six stages in the race. In his first visit to Brazil, Laffont did not spare compliments to the organization. "The race was super long. The tracks were not so technical, but you needed power to get a good result. Now we are on the fight for the third place overall", celebrated Laffont. "I found the race super beautiful, people are so cool. There is a real spirit in Brasil Ride. Its really tough, for sure, I think its one of the toughest", he completed.
End of the hegemony among women - After Raiza Goulão and Viviane Favery win the first five stages of Brazil Ride, it was the turn of Isabella Lacerda and Nina Baum feel the taste of victory this Friday. After attacking at the start of the competition, the duo remained in the first place until the end..
For Raiza and Vivi, the leaders, it wasnt such a bad result. They are still the owners of the 2015 cup so far, with a gap of approximately 3h41min42 ahead of the competition, Isabella and Nina.
