Brasil Ride is considered the Woodstock of cycling

The main mountain biking competition of the Americas brings the spirit of freedom and friendship to the astonishing scenarios of Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil

Rio de Contas, Bahia, Brasil - For many people involved in Brazil Ride, the main mountain biking competition of the Americas is the Woodstock of riders. If the legendary festival of the 1960s was announced in the US as "three days of peace and music", the one in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, is seven days of peace and sport. Similarities are in the brotherhood atmosphere, camping, and the will to live a unique riding experience. It’s not by chance that the event’s slogan is "more than a race, a stage in your life".

And adding up to this atmosphere there’s the landscape of Chapada Diamantina. Landlocked in the heart of the state of Bahia, the region combines cultural and natural attractions. "The vast Atlantic Forest, flowery meadows and plains of endless green share the landscape with patches of caatinga - a kind of desert vegetation, and cerrado - the Brazilian savanna. Huge rocky walls, gorges, canyons, caves, rivers and waterfalls complete the exquisitely beautiful scenery of Chapada Diamantina", as stated in the official website of Bahia (bahia.com.br).

The historical wealth of the region is also unique. Previously inhabited by the Maracá natives, the region has been explored by the pioneers and bandeirantes from 1710, with the finding of deposits and gold near Rio de Contas Pequeno River. From 1844, colonization was boosted by the discovery of diamonds in the surroundings of Mucugê River. With wealth came traders, colonists, Jesuits and foreigners that have spread through the villages. With the depletion of mineral exploration, agricultural activities and crafts developed.

Brazil Ride is disputed between the towns of Mucugê and Rio de Contas, cities designated as national heritage by the National Artistic and Historical Institute (IPHAN). For the bikers who spend a week in Chapada Diamantina, this is a unique opportunity to see some of the colonial history of Brazil, besides enjoying the unique nature in the region of Bahia, so rich in diversity of flora and fauna with over 50 types of orchids, bromeliads and vines, as well as rare animal species such as the giant anteater, giant armadillo, porcupine, capybara and many species of birds.

For the athletes from abroad, Chapada Diamantina’s landscape is a dream. "I've never been in this part of Brazil before and I'm excited to see all scenarios and landscapes, and enjoy the race", declared athlete Nathalie Schneitter, who represented Switzerland at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, as soon as she landed in Bahia. Not surprisingly, Brazil Ride brings all the wealth of Bahia through the eyes of some of the best Brazilian photographers, accompanied by the German Armin Küstenbrück, one of the world references in Mountain Biking photography.
